The above is the summary I asked Gemini to create about Gemini Notebook and how it can help genealogists. To me, this is a tool that lets you ask your documents, files, videos, transcripts and whatever else you add questions. To this point, this was simply not possible.

• Cost – It’s free. Well, it’s free to start. There are some limits on how many sources you can add and there may be limits on the number of notebooks you can create. That’s ok, just try it and see if it helps you.
• Focus – Source-grounded. This means that it will use the sources you provide to answer questions and provide summaries. This limits hallucinations and other made-up stuff.
• Engage – Question your sources. It is really amazing to ask your sources questions. It reviews documents, videos, websites that you provide and builds answers from those sources. Discuss!
• Create – fun output. Beyond discussions with your sources, you can have Gemini create a podcast like audio discussion about the content. Create infographics. Have it create reports. Get in there and play!

How have I used it?

To apply this to genealogy and help me write up this article, I created a notebook and added several sources including papers (PDF), YouTube videos and text files related to the migration and settlement of one of my ancestors. It took a few minutes for it to review and process these 12 sources and the first thing it did was to provide a concise summary along with several prompts to get the conversation started. It is really a cool experience to interrogate your sources looking for things that you may have missed in reading (or skimming) them. There is so much more.

The Studio panel on the right allows you to really have fun. Audio overview, slide deck, mind map, infographics, tables and more. When you create these items, it will “cost” you some tokens. In the free version, there is no monetary cost, but rather, Gemini tracks and limits how much “compute” you can use it. It will tell you how much it will “cost” and what you have left. If you exhaust all your tokens, they will reset in 5 hours (as of this post). It will continue to reset until you hit your weekly limit. If you find Gemini Notebook helpful and you are hitting usage limits, there are paid plans as well.

💡 Pro Tip

If you are uploading PDF documents, for best results ensure they have been OCR’d as opposed to simply scans of pages placed in the document. Gemini Notebook does not do as well without OCR text available. You can open a PDF in Word and have it save as a PDF to make the text available.

If you are not sure about the PDF, upload it to your notebook and ask Gemini if it can read the contents. It will tell you 🙂
